Lizzy had only been home a few minutes when her phone rang, and her heart jumped up into her throat. Then slid right back down again when she looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Maddie and not Ethan.“A couple of us are meeting at the pub tonight,” she told Lizzy. “Want to come with?”

The only thing she wanted to do was to change into her pajamas, curl up on the couch and feel sorry for herself. “I don’t think so.”

“Oh, come on. I’ve hardly seen you for weeks. And I still owe you dinner and a pint.”

“I’m not feeling very good,” she said, and it wasn’t a lie really. She felt lousy. Heartsick and guilty. And sad. Deep-down-into-her-soul sad. And not so much because it was over, since it was bound to end eventually anyway, but because she was pretty sure that not only had she made him angry, but she’d hurt him, as well.

“I hope you didn’t work today,” Maddie said. “If the queen finds out you’re sick and she in her fragile state catches it, they’ll sack you for sure.”

Sometimes Lizzy got so tired of her backhanded comments about the royal family. What had they ever done to Maddie, other than supply her with reliable employment for the past twelve years? But she bit her tongue. She had given up trying to convince Maddie that the new queen was nothing like the former. Nor was Phillip like his father. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way lately to distance himself from that distinction.

“Maybe we can go out next weekend,” she said instead.

“You know what we need? A girl’s weekend away. Maybe we could catch a bus and spend a few days on the other side of the island. We could shop until we drop, drink ourselves silly and meet sexy, unavailable men. What do you think?”

Meeting more men was the last thing Lizzy had on her mind right now. “I really can’t leave. Not with the queen so close to her due date.”

“Why?”

“She might need me. What if she goes into labor early?”

“So what? It’s not like you’re delivering the baby.”

“But I want to be there.”

“Why? I mean, honestly, Lizzy. Why do you even care? Do you think they give a damn about you? Well, I hate to break it to you, but they don’t. You’re just a servant to them. A glorified slave.”

Lizzy bit her tongue so hard she tasted blood. Maddie would never understand. She wouldn’t even try. “I’m going to let you go, Maddie.”

She sighed, probably thinking that Lizzy was hopeless. A lost cause. “Take care of yourself. Eat chicken soup. I hope you feel better soon.”

“Thanks. I will.”

“I’ll call tomorrow to check on you.”

“Bye.” She hung up and set the phone back in the cradle. Then she turned and looked around the apartment. It was the same as it had been before Ethan showed up at her door that first time, but for some reason it felt different.
